Mosques of West Africa

During my time as an undergrad at Kean University, I was invited to participate in a research expedition in West Africa with Dr. Thomas Shaw.  My assignment was to photograph historical mosques to complement his research for the book he was writing.

We spent an unforgettable and sometimes difficult two weeks traveling through Mali in Sub-Saharan Africa.  From the capital Bamako to Segou, Djenne and Mopti.  Although these locations may not sound familiar they all hold historic significance as world heritage sites, including the great mosque of Djenne which was first built in the 13/14th Century.

The time spent on this journey helped me better understand people and their cultures, preparing me to be open to experiences in any part of the world.  The camera can truly bring you to the most unique places.  Sadly, Dr. Shaw passed away before completing his book.  I will never forget the time spent with him and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of his work.
